The Philosophy

The best pieces come from wood most people throw away.

Forklift-damaged boards. Cracked slabs. Wood written off as waste. Those are the ones that carry the most character, a rawness and a history worth saving.

Every piece starts with finding that story in the material. Then building something around it that earns a place in your home for decades. Something people will ask about.

Meet Doug
"The best part of Doug's studio is that his pieces come with stories about the journey. Ask him where each piece of wood came from."
Stephen M. — Austin Studio Tour

How It Works

A custom piece
shouldn't feel complicated.

Most people have never commissioned furniture before. Here's what working with Doug actually looks like, from a vague idea to something in your home that guests ask about every time.

1 Start Here

Tell Doug about your space

A photo, a vague idea, a room that hasn't worked for years. Any of it is enough. Doug responds within 48 hours.

2 Doug Brings the Ideas

Multiple sketched directions

Based on your space and style, Doug sketches several design directions. You don't need to know what you want yet. That's his job.

No charge
3 Narrow and Refine

Pick 2 to 3 to develop further

Doug develops those with detailed sketches, materials, and exact pricing. No surprises, no pressure.

4 Lock It In

50% deposit secures your spot

Covers materials and gets you in the queue. Because Doug takes 1 to 2 commissions at a time, your piece gets his eyes on it every single day until it's done.

5 Built and Delivered

Progress updates throughout

Most pieces are ready within 4 to 8 weeks. Doug ships or delivers personally and makes sure it's exactly what you designed.

About Doug

Mechanical engineer.
Lifelong builder.

For his 8th birthday, Doug asked for a pile of wood from Home Depot. Some things don't change. After 17 years in tech, he traded PowerPoint slides for hand planes and hasn't looked back.

That engineering instinct shows in every piece. Precision where it counts, an obsession with getting the details right. The joints are tight. The brass inlays are flush. Every detail is deliberate.

He combines an engineering mindset and true craftsmanship. We discovered Bad Grackle at the Austin Studio Tour, bought a cutting board, and are now working on a custom commission for a dining table. Couldn't be more excited.
